Magneto - Optics of freestanding Fe monolayers from first principles

چکیده
The nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr-effect (NOLIMOKE) is determined for freestanding Fe monolayers with several in-plane structures from first principles. Based on the theory of nonlinear magneto-optics by Hübner and Benne-mann [Phys. Rev. B, 40, 5973 (1989)] we calculate the nonlinear susceptibil-ities of the monolayers using the ab initio FLAPW-method WIEN95 with the additional implementation of spin-orbit coupling and the calculation of the dipole transition matrix elements appropriate for freestanding monolayers. We present results for the spectral dependence of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor elements and the resulting intensities and Kerr angles. Special emphasize is put on the effects of structural changes such as the variation of the lattice constant and different surface orientations. The influence of spin-orbit coupling on the tensor elements for different magnetization directions is presented as well as the azimuthal dependence of the intensities generated by several low index surfaces, showing the pronounced sensitivity of second harmonic generation to lateral structural changes as well as magnetic properties even in the monolayer range.

Using an electronic tight-binding theory we calculate the nonlinear magneto-optical response from an x-Cu/1Fe/Cu(001) film as a function of frequency and Cu overlayer thickness (x=3. . .25). We find very strong spinpolarized quantum well oscillations in the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect (NOLIMOKE). These are enhanced by the large density of Fe d states close to the Fermi level acting as...

Recently, freestanding atomically thick Fe metal patches up to 10 atoms wide have been fabricated experimentally in tiny pores in graphene. This concept can be extended conceptually to extended freestanding monolayers. We have therefore performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to evaluate the early melting stages of platinum, silver, gold, and copper freestanding metal monolayers. Our...

Nonlinear magneto-optics is a very sensitive fingerprint of the electronic, magnetic, and atomic structure of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ferromagnetic films. Analyzing theoretically the nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect for thin films of Fe(001) and at Fe surfaces we demonstrate exemplarily how various electronic material properties of ferromagnets , such as the d-band width, the magnet...

We perform a first principles calculation of the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic bcc Fe. Our theory identifies an intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity and relates it to the k-space Berry phase of occupied Bloch states. This dc conductivity has the same origin as the well-known magneto-optical effect, and our result accounts for experimental measurement on Fe crystals...
